Teenager is Irish swimming’s latest star

Sycerika McMahon has won her first European senior swimming medal.

She took silver on the final day of competition at the European Championships in Debrecen, Hungary.  McMahon came second in the 50m Breaststroke Final in a time of 31.27, missing out on gold by just 0.02 of a second.  The Czech Republic’s Petra Chocova won the race.

McMahon, who is aged 17 and still at school, set a new Irish record in winning the medal, beating the previous record of 31.49, which was held by herself.  McMahon has already secured Olympic qualification when she finished fifth in the 100m Breaststroke Final where she finished fifth last Tuesday.

In what has been an extremely meet for Irish swimming, the team have had 4 finalists, 8 semi-finalists, set 3 new Irish Senior Records, had two Olympic qualifications and won a Silver medal.
