British Open champion Darren Clarke will miss the year’s second Major tournament at Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The Dungannon man missed every cut on tour this season and has been forced to miss the mid-June event with the recurrence of a groin injury.
Clarke, who won’t appear again on tour until next month’s Irish Open at Royal Portrush, said: “I am extremely disappointed as Open champion that I will not be able to play the US Open. I have to make sure I am 100 per cent ready for Royal Lytham and I have been advised not to play for a month.”
The Irish Open will take place at Royal Portrush from June 28th – 1st July for the first time since 1951 and Clarke has said it would mean as much to win the tournament in his home province as what it would to win a Major.
