Dublin hammer hapless Laois

Dublin 3-23 Laois 1-07

Dublin have battered Laois at O’Connor Park in Tullamore as The O’Moore County look out of their depth at the top level of senior inter-county Championship hurling.

It was all too easy for the Metropolitans as they cruised through this Leinster Championship quarter final.  The first half was quite impressive but Laois were appalling throughout.

Conor McCormack hit the opening point inside the first minute of the game after good work by David Treacy.  McCormack added another within a minute.

Paul Ryan adds a 65 on six minutes to put the Dubs three points ahead.  Goalkeeper Reilly clears the ball 70 metres up the field and Laois very nearly net a goal, but Gary Maguire blocks Neil Foyle’s shot on the goal line.

Dublin raise a green flag within a minute as Liam Rushe finishes a strong run through the Laois defence and gives Eoin Reilly no chance in goal.   Laois 0-00 Dublin 1-03

Paul Ryan points a 30 metre free before Willie Hyland converts Laois’ first point to put six between the teams.  That gap is halved almost immediately as a melee inside the Dublin score from an Reilly long ball which sees Stephen Maher eventually bundle the ball into the Dublin net.  Laois 1-01 Dublin 1-04 – a big boost to the O’Moore men.

A cracking point from Sutcliffe who beats two men before driving over, followed by another from Paul Ryan and another GOAL, this time scored by Liam Rushe, who turns Maher before smashing the ball into the roof of the net.  Laois 1-01 Dublin 2-07 – this game looks to be all over after 25 minutes.

Further points from McCormack and Paul Ryan are sandwiched by another GOAL for Dublin, this time Shane Treacy flicks a high ball from Shane Durkin into the net with Eoin Reilly losing the challenge.  Laois 1-01 Dublin 3-11 five minutes before half-time and this game is well and truly over.

Further Dublin points before the interval from Kearney, Durkin and Treacy see the Dubs lead 3-14 to 1-01 at the short whistle.  Even the most optimistic of Laois fans will admit that this game is finished.

HALF TIME Laois 1-01 Dubln 3-14

The second half Dublin take their foot off the pedal and empty the bench though still outscore the O’Moore men 0-09 to 0-06.  Dublin march on to the Leinster Championship semi-final against Kilkenny at Croke Park in three weeks time, while Laois are headed for the qualifiers.  It looks like being a very short summer indeed for Teddy McCarthy’s men if they don’t improve drastically on this performance.  If their league campaign was anything to go by, then that looks unlikely.
