Irish bookmakers are counting the cost this morning, after a record breaking Cheltenham that saw Irish horses win an incredible 13 races.
The visitors had previously scored ten successes but this week’s haul sets a new record. Irish horses won both the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup, and won 6 of the 7 races on the opening day of the festival.
Irish bookmakers estimated people spent around €80m online and in betting shops during the week. Tony Kenny of William Hills said the bookies estimated Irish punters had finished the week around €10m up.
“The last few years the bookies have cleaned up,” he said. “This year we’ve been cleaned out.”
