Victory for Kenny Egan on St Patrick’s Day brought the WSB season to a close at the Fillmore Arena in Miami Beach.
Egan’s Miami Gallos team had nothing but their pride to fight for as the American season drew to its conclusion but Egan, watched by family members, was determined to end it on a positive note, especially having lost his Irish Elite title recently to Moate’s Joe Ward.
In the 85kg Light Heavyweight division referee Frank Santore stepped in and ended Egan’s bout with Elber Passon, after 2 mins 47 seconds of round two at which point Egan was well on top in his battle with the Brazilian.
The Dubliner said later: “Tonight I wanted to box well for my family that came to see me fight,” . “I went in there and picked my shots, listened to Coach Angel when he told me to stay in and box inside, and when I saw the opportunity I went in for the kill.”
Not such a good St Patrick’s Day though for Mullingar’s John Joe Joyce fighting in the middleweight (73 kg/160 lbs) as he lost for a third time against Russell Lamour (Portland, Maine) . Lamour won on this occasion by , 45-50, 46-49, 47-48.
The Gallos finished the season in third place in the WSB Americans Conference winning 4 and losing 8 of their 12 bouts..
