Allianz FL Division 1
Down got their Allianz NFL Division One campaign back on track last night, impressive 1-16 to 0-11 win over Monaghan at Pairc Esler, Newry.
The home side had been playing decent football all season until they suffered a heavy defeat against Cork last weekend. However, they made no mistake on Saturday as they collected full points from this encounter.
With Martin Clarke once again leading the way, the hosts went in at the break ahead by 0-8 to 0-6. They then opened up a healthy lead scoring Down four of the first five points after the restart. After Vinny Corey fouled Benny Coulter, Clarke fired home the penalty to guarantee the win.
Clarke was the star on show, hitting 1-4 for the Mourne men, but he was ably assisted and eight different players got on the scoreboard for the hosts. James McCartan will have been well pleased with this performance and must now harbour serious league ambitions.
Monaghan suffered their fourth defeat in a row and are looking likely relegation contenders at this point. They face Kerry in their next outing and are unlikely to pick up anything easy in that encounter.
