Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will return to London to head the recruitment process alongside owner Joe Lewis and directors Sir Keith Mills, Matthew Collecott and Donna Cullen.

Intermediaries acting for Spurs have already contacted the 34-year-old’s agent to gauge his interest with the possibility that he may be interviewed later this week. Villas-Boas, who was sacked by Chelsea last month, is understood to have privately expressed an interest in the job.

The news comes after Laurent Blanc, the current French national coach, emerged as a potential candidate. Blanc’s contract with the France Football Federation expires after the European Championship and his future will depend on France’s performance during the final rounds of Euro 2012 as he may yet stay on.

After four years as Spurs manager, Harry Redknapp was sacked last Wednesday after weeks of growing tension between the 65-year-old and his chairman. The situation came to a head as the club told Redknapp they had decided to go in a fresh direction.

Only two of Redknapp’s backroom staff have been retained in form of Tim Sherwood and goalkeeping coach Tony Parks. Sherwood is highly rated by Levy and is likely to feature prominently in the new set-up

Spurs have been linked with a variety of managers including Wigan manager Roberto Martinez, while Fabio Capello and former Tottenham striker Jurgen Klinsmann, who is currently the United States national team manager, have also been linked with the post.

Everton manager David Moyes is another premiership manager who has been linked with the club and is known to have has admirers at White Hart Lane. However, there are concerns that the 49-year-old Scot may not fit the mould of the modern coach Spurs are seeking.

Moyes is thought to be willing to discuss the position at White Hart Lane but Everton are not expecting an approach for their highly rated coach and he will continue to prepare for the new season with club after he returns from his trip to Euro 2012 this week.
