There is a possibility he could return should Italy reach the semi-finalsa, but the Juventus man will definitely miss the quarter-final having been forced off during the second half of the Group C decider against the Republic of Ireland on Monday night.
The 28 year-old is Italy’s most experienced defender with 53 caps and Azzurri team doctor Enrico Catellacci has confirmed that: “The scan he underwent confirmed it’s a strain. He will certainly miss the game on Sunday. Obviously, in a competition like this you have to try everything to have him back as quickly as possible but we will not take any unnecessary risks with his muscles.”
Chiellini had been a doubt going into the tournament with a similar injury suffered towards the end of Juventus’ Serie A winning campaign but Catellacci confirmed that the two injuries were not related to each other. Catellaci confirmed that Chiellini was very motivated to get playing and had already started rehab.
