Defending Champion Sharapova Beaten in Fourth Round

Updated: July 2, 2012

World number one and top seed Maria Sharapova was sensationally beaten 6-4 6-3 in a rain interrupted fourth round match against Germany’s Sabine Lisicki.

Having broken Sharapova’s serve three times in the opening set, the fifteenth seed raced into a 4-1 lead in the second set. The current French Open champion rallied, but a series of big serves and returns saw Lisicki take the match on her third match point.

Lisicki will now be a firm crowd favourite after her exploits at last year’s tournament when she became only the second ever wild-card entry to reach the semi-finals. She lost that game to Sharapova, but was emotional after the game to gain revenge. “It is unbelieveable. I’m so happy – I’ve lost the three previous meetings against Maria. I just went for my shots” she told reporters.

Lisicki will now face the challenge of fellow country woman Angelique Kerber in the quarter-final. The eight seed had a 6-1 6-1 victory over Kim Clijsters who was playing in her final Wimbledon.
