Irish Olympic profile: Alistair Cragg, Athletics – Men’s 5,000 metres

A seasoned professional Alistair is one of the major names on the Grand Prix circuit. South-African born, of Irish stock, he lives most of the year in Arkansas with another base in London. He is the Irish 5K and 10 national record holder.

Now 32, London will be his third Olympics. He won gold at the World Indoor Championships in 2005 and recently set a new Irish and European record time as part of his London 2012 build-up in the Carlsbad 5K.

But this is a strong field and Alistair’s medal ambitions could well hinge on how others in the field perform in the 5K; eventual winner of Carlsbad 5K, Ethiopian Dejen Gebremeskel bolted away at the 4k mark, leaving the field for dust, Alistair among them.
