Connacht Rugby: Nikora picks up top players award

Updated: July 13, 2012

Miah Nikora is the latest winner of the Player of the Month Award, sponsored by Hartmanns of Galway.

As the prestigious award was announced at the end of the season, after Miah had returned to his native Gisborne, the former New Zealand U21 outhalf collected his Tag Heuer watch from the William’s Street Jewellers this week.
The award is presented to players who have shown exceptional commitment, skill and camaraderie both on and off the pitch and Miah epitomised these characteristics as Connacht streaked to their highest ever finishing position in the league.

After receiving the award from Caitriona Hartmann Miah said:
“I’m delighted with the award, it’s a huge honour to be singled out for your performances on the pitch and I’d like to thank Hartmanns for sponsoring such a great prize. We had a strong finish to the league with three wins from four and hopefully we can take that momentum straight into next season.”

Team Manager Tim Allnutt added :
“Miah is very deserving of this award, he showed some very strong displays in the last number of matches and he certainly helped seal our victories over Dragons, Ulster and Aironi. He also scored our only points in the last match against Glasgow back in May. He has performed to a consistently high standard throughout the season and been an integral part of our backline.”

Richard Hartmann spoke about the links between Miah’s native Gisborne and his own family connections in the area: “We are delighted every month to present this award to the player of the month but this month was extra special as Miah hails from Gisbourne in New Zealand, a town with which our family has strong links. My two Grand Aunts left Galway in the 1950′s for a new life in New Zealand and settled in Gisbourne. I’ve been out there to visit all my New Zealand cousins and they regularly come back to Galway so it was a pleasant surprise to learn that Miah was from the same place. It’s great to see him doing so well in Connacht and we wish him the best for the coming season”
