Aidan O’Brien unleashed a potential star at Dundalk on Monday afternoon when his horse Mars landed his maiden in very taking style.
A son of Galileo, Mars came to Dundalk with a big home reputation. So much so that he had been backed for the 2013 Investec Derby before setting foot on a racecourse.
Settled at the head of affairs by Joseph O’Brien, Mars was always travelling well in the 7f contest and only had to be pushed out to record a facile success from stablemate The Ferryman.
Speaking after the race O’Brien junior said “He has a really, really good attitude. We’ve had to wait for a long time to get him out because of the way the ground has been.
“He settled well today but was still very green and he will come on for the run. It’s very rarely that a horse wins on the bridle first time out.”
The bookmakers were suitably impressed and cut Mars across the board for the 2013 Derby with Boylesports and Ladbrokes both cutting him to 10/1 market leader.
