All too easy for Takar in Minstrel Stakes

Updated: July 21, 2012

It looked to be straight forward on paper and that’s how it turned out for Takar as he hacked away with the feature race at the Curragh on Saturday afternoon, the Group 3 KARE Race Day Minstrel Stakes.

Sent off at the prohibitive odds of 1/7 the John Oxx trained son of Oratorio had little trouble in landing his third win of the campaign so far.

The three runner field were taken along in the early stages of the 7f contest by the Aidan O’Brien trained Among Equals with Johhny Murtagh and Takar in second with the outsider of the three, Singing Bird, bringing up the rear.

Murtagh never had an anxious moment, pushing Takar into the lead two furlongs from home and keeping him up to his work from the running on Singing Bird who chased him home with a long gap back to the front running Among Equals.

Speaking in the winners enclosure after the race trainer John Oxx said ” It was straightforward I suppose. It’s not too often that you get a penalty kick. He goes on that ground which is amazing as he moves like a horse who wants fast ground.

“His next race will be at Leopardstown in the Desmond Stakes where he might encounter faster ground. The only time he ran on fast ground was in the Guineas here and he ran badly but we will see what happens.”
