Athletics – Men’s 20K & 50K Race Walks

A real medal prospect here, Rob Heffernan, at 33, has a lifetime of race walking experience at the highest levels and will be a fourth-time Olympian in London.

The hugely talented Togher, Cork City athlete, currently holds the Irish national record for the 20K and 50K and is one of the country’s most respected athletes.

In recent weeks the Cork walker has admitted to receiving coaching advice from Spanish drug cheat Francisco ‘Paco’ Fernandez, which has raised some eyebrows in Irish athletic circles. However the Spaniard, who was banned for using performance-enhancing drugs, has not received any payment and, more significantly, the Cork man has not breached any rules by taking advice from the former Olympic Silver medalist.

Heffernan is one of Ireland’s four prospective podium finishers and, the husband of Marion Heffernan, will throw everything he can into these games as they may be his last as a competitor.
