Irish Olympic 2012 profile: Olive Loughnane Athletics – Women’s 20K Walk

Making her fourth Olympic appearance, Olive was born in Cork and reared in Carrabane, Co. Galway. Now 36, she lives back in Cork with her husband and daughter.

Olive has been in great form in recent years gaining a silver medal at the World Championship in 2009 and winning the World Race Walking Circuit in 2011.

The vastly experienced Loughnane qualified for the Olympics by finishing first in Slovakia on a time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 40 seconds, a whole minute ahead of her nearest rival.

She finished seventh in Beijing in 2008 and has never won a medal at the Olympics. Although her form has been consistent the Cork woman would be one of the oldest ever winners of a medal at the Olympics. Alas, even this may be out of the reach of one of Ireland’s greatest ever female walkers.
