Katie Taylor given tough route to gold

Updated: July 27, 2012

Ireland’s flag bearer and women’s boxing top seed Katie Taylor has been handed a tough task if she is to take home gold from the London Olympics.

The Irish, European and World champion must beat either Britain’s Natasha Jonas or America’s Queen Underwood in the quarter final after being given a bye in the round of 16.

Taylor’s first involvement will be on August 5th and victory in that fight would guarantee a bronze medal and though she has beaten both Jonas and Underwood recently they should provide a close fight.

Though Taylor has avoided her old nemesis Russia’s Sofya Ochigava, who ended herthree year undefeated streak in 2010, Underwood is seen by many to be the most dangerous obstacle in Taylor’s quest for Olympic gold.
