Team Ireland’s Fionnuala Britton failed to make the finals of women’s 5,000m despite running a personal best of 15:12.97 in her heat.
The Kilcoole runner needed a slow race in the second heat of the day to see her through but it was not to be.
Britton finished 10th in her heat and despite her run besting the personal bests of eight of the runners going into the second heat, they managed to up their performance in what turned out to be a strong race with four of the five fastest losers qualifying.
It was a better morning for Team GB and Julia Bleasdale and Joanne Pavey will both feature in the final.
The race marks Britton’s last at this Olympics after a poor 10,000 final on Saturday in which she was lapped by winner Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba.
