When all eyes were on Katie Taylor in the Excel Arena yesterday afternoon there was an Irish featherweight making history of their own across the Atlantic.
Tallaght native Patrick ‘Pajo’ Hyland extended his unbeaten professional record to 27 fights with a unanimous point victory over Dominican Carlos Fulgencio after knocking his opponent to the canvas three times in the eight-round bout.
The win sees Hyland move past John Duddy’s record of 26 professional wins in a row.
The Irish and WBF featherweight champion was happy with the fight even if he was pushed the full distance.
“I could have done a little bit better but I used my boxing skills and coasted through the eight rounds, I got the rounds in and that’s what I wanted,” he said after.
Hyland has his eyes set keenly on challenging the top fighters in his decision and feels he is on track to step up.
“Come December or January maybe get a shot at Billy Dib for IBF title or someone like [WBO featherweight champion, Orlando] Salido, after one more fight I will be in there ready.”
