Ireland’s Olympic athletes will not attend any official reception as a team upon their homecoming on Monday afternoon – as the Olympic Council of Ireland says the athletes want to return to their families immediately.
Dublin City Council had been preparing to host crowds at the Mansion House for a civic reception but the Olympic Council have informed them that the athletes will not be taking part in any activities in the city centre as they are too tired from their exertions in London.
Team Ireland have been invited to Áras an Uachtaráin by President Michael D. Higgins and may coincide with a reception at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park but that is not due to take place until a later date.
The Dublin Airport Authority has said that athletes will be taken to a private area for a press conference upon their arrival and their is no plans to allow the public to access the athletes when they touchdown.
It is expected that John Joe Nevin and Katie Taylor will take part in events in Mullingar and Bray respectively though Taylor is thought to want to spend some time with her extended family before making any public appearances.
