Updated: August 23, 2012

Republic of Ireland hero Richard Dunne looks set to leave Aston Villa for Stoke as new boss Paul Lambert is keen to move the 32 year old on to clear space in the squad.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis wants add the Tallaght man’s mettle to his back line and fees should not be an issue, but the transfer is being held up as the Potters’ medical team await Dunne’s progress from groin surgery.

Dunne is in the final year of his contract at Villa and will not be offered an extension as he turns 33 next month.

Martin O’Neill brought Dunne to Villa Park from Manchester City in 2009 for a fee of £5m, he has since made 111 appearances for the club and only returned at the end of last season to help the club’s fight against relegation after a long lay off with a broken collar bone.
