Irish midfielder Whelan set to join Wolves

Updated: August 31, 2012

Newstalk radio has revealed that Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan could be on his way to Molineux on transfer deadline day after Wolves declared an interest.

The Irish international’s first team opportunities at the Brittania Stadium are under threat after the Potters signed Charlie Adam from Liverpool today.

Wolves have money to spend having sold Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis already during this transfer window, and need to strengthen their team to achieve a swift return to the Premier League.

The transfer is of course not good news for Irish international soccer fans as Whelan was one of very few current internationals to be playing with a Premier League club.

Stoke fans appear not too bothered about the loss of Whelan from their midfield with many stating on the midlanders’ forums that Scottish international Adam is a much better midfield option for the club than the 28 year-old Dubliner who has spent four and a half seasons with the club.
