Munster consolidated their lead at the head of the Magners League table with a one point victory over Cardiff Blues on Friday night.
As he has done on many occasions before, Ronan O”Gara proved to be the visitors hero, kicking the winning penalty midway through the second half. It was enough to see his side home in front and remain at the forefront of the competition. The Irish side looked in trouble when Dan Parks gave the hosts the lead from a drop goal, but O’Gara was on hand when needed most and his three points proved to be the winning score on the night.
Last night’s defeat all but ends the Welsh sides hopes of making the final but the win keeps Munster on track for a home draw in the play-off semi-finals. James Coughlan gave the visitors the lead with a well take try early in the first half and O’Gara kicked two further scores to give the men in red a 13-12 lead at the interval. Leigh Halfpenny kicked four penalties to keep the home side in the game.
The second half was a much tamer affair and Cardiff looked to be heading for victory after a drop goal from Parks gave them a two point lead. However, O’Gara proved to be the Munster hero, hitting the crucial penalty that saw his side emerge with full points on the night. Munster have led the field from the outset of this competition and look well on course for a semi final spot.
