St Nicholas Abbey set for weekend return

Former champion juvenile, St Nicholas Abbey could be set for a return to action as soon as this weekend, as he received an entry for the Geegeez.co.uk Alleged Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Aidan O’Brien’s colt has not raced since being a disappointing beaten favourite in last season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. He had been a hugely impressive performer as a 2-y-o and won the Racing Post Trophy in effortless fashion. Derrick Smith’s horse has obviously been showing connections enough for them to decide to continue to race St Nicholas Abbey as a 4-y-o.

If the horse appears at the Curragh this weekend, he faces an intriguing battle with Triumph Hurdle runnerup, Unaccompanied. The latter mare, trained by Dermot Weld has looked very decent over flights and takes in Sunday’s contest en route to the Champion 4-y-o Hurdle at Punchestown. However, she also holds an entry in the Give Your Mother A Treat Handicap on Sunday.
