Ireland’s selectors have today named their team for tomorrow’s International against Scotland at the National Stadium. As reported yesterday in SportsNewsIreland, Scotland have stepped in to replace India who withdrew only on Tuesday leaving the IABA but three days to find suitable opponents.
Ryston’s Chris Phelan, a finalist in the recent Elite Championships and Kildare man, the present holder of the Irish U.21 crown, faces Liam Moles of Denny ABC in the 52kg Flyweight bout.
In the same division, Myles Casey who fights out of the Our Lady of Lourdes BC (a brother of Willie ‘Big Bang’) comes up against John Thomson (Dennistoun McNair ABC ).
Davey Joe Joyce, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 World Youth Championships and the current U/21 and Intermediate champ faces a tough opponent in the Alloa ABC’s Scott Hartley, a heavy hitter who narrowly lost the Scottish final recently against James Cunningham of Dennistoun McNair.
Ireland’s Danny Coughlan, from St Anne’s BC also faces a strong opponent in Stephen Tiffney of Lochend BC , while Tyrone McKenna from the Oliver Plunkett BC clashes with Dunfermline’s Callum Susans at light-welterweight. Susans won the Scottish light welterweight title by a single point following a
count back against Cleland’s Darren McGinn in their Championships.
Patrick O’Shea from Sunnyside BC in Cork, who collected a silver medal in the 2010 World Military Championships is Ireland’s heavyweight contender here and meets Steven Nicol, the Lochend fighter who lost the Scottish final against Kevin Bruce last time out – for Bruce it was a third successive Scottish title
at three different weights.
The Scottish Amateur Boxing Association is to be congratulated at putting together a strong team given only three days’ notice. The squad is due in Dublin today.
