One Cool Cookie, who had been a 40-1 chance for next Saturday’s Aintree Grand National, suffered a fatal injury to a his front leg, during his final preparations for the race on Friday afternoon.

Owned by Gigginstown House Stud, the ten-year-old had his biggest day when he won the Grade 1 Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in 2007.
Trainer Charlie Swan said on Saturday: “He was a great old servant and my first Grade 1 winner as a trainer and we were so looking forward to the National next Saturday and keeping him for those bank races. I was riding him in a piece of work myself yesterday when he broke a front leg.”

One Cool Cookie made his final start in the Cross CountryChase at Cheltenham last month. He was still travelling well when running out with a circuit remaining. In all, he won eight of his 42 starts and £249,095 in prize-money.
