Finals day today in the ISAF Sailing World Cup – the 42nd Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia Mapfre in Mallorca and leading the Irish challenge in the Radial Class is 21 years old Annalise Murphy from the National Yacht Club Dun Laoghaire.
As the teams entered the final session Annalise was in 11th position,on 84 Net gtpoints, behind New Zealander Sara Winther (57 net points) and Evi Van Acker (62) of the Royal Belgian Sailing Club who currently lies third. Today’s final stages iare scheduled for the C’an Pastilla Club in Mallorca and as ever in this event the weather will play a major part in deciding the final outcome.
Annalise got off to a flying start in the competition during heavy-weather sailing, with an excellent second place on the opening day. In the second contest she went one better, clocking up a first in the 78 boat fleet of Laser Radials.
Alas others fared better in the prevailing ever changing but difficult conditions,in the next two races , as she logged a 24th and a 14th in those sessions . Towards the end of the week things improved again for Annalise ,with an eighth and a seventh helping her back into a top 12 position ;
There have been many changes on the leader board in the past 48 hours – indeed American Laser Radial star Paige Railey of the St Francis Club, who was out in front,is now back in 5th position ,followed by Dutch World no 1, Marit Bouwmeester in 6th, so in the circumstances Murphy’s 11th position is an
excellent showing bearing in mind this is one of the most keenly contested of all the events in Mallorca and she is one of the youngest and least experienced competitors.
Annalise who took up sailing at the age of seven and entered her first major event two years later – owes much to her Coach Rory Fitzpatrick and to her parents who have encouraged her along the way. The next major event will be the Hyeres ISAF World Cup event in late April in France,where Murphy will
again be seeking to improve upon her current World no 9 ranking . With a possible place in the Irish team for London 2012 a possibility one thing is sure and that is that we will be hearing a lot more about Annalise Murphy in the months and year to come.
