Six Irish boxers are through to the semi-finals of the Gee Bee Multi Nations tournament in Helsinki following last night’s Quarter Finals, in the Finnish capital.
Donegal’s Jason Quigley, who boxes out of the Finn Valley Club had a well-deserved win over the Estonian, Arttjom Fjodorov 12-4 having led 4-1 and 7-3 at the end of rounds one and two
No such luck though for the 2010 European bronze medallist, Tyrone McCullagh, who suffered a heavy 0 – 7 defeat against the host nation’s Matti Koota .
Nonetheless despite McCullagh’s defeat , the Irish squad will have six of the team in action in today’s semi-finals.
In other action Friday , Elite flyweight champ Michael Conlon came from behind to defeat Russia’s Jaroslav Navlivako in their s 52Kg quarter-final winning 10-5 when the bell tolled.
Another Irish success followed when EU champion David Oliver Joyce had a remarkable resounding 16-4 win over England’s Martin Ward, the English ABA featherweight champion of 2010.
Bray Garda, and Irish Elite champion, Adam Nolan, scored a convincing 6-0 win over Mikhail Kiiski of Estonia and now faces Elite GB Olympics hope, Scott Cardle in what should prove to be a great semi-final bout.
Of the remaining Irish squad members, Kenny Egan and Tommy McCarthy both received byes into today’s semi-finals. Overall a great day for Irish boxing when one also takes into account the 3 Golds and a Silver in Warsaw.
