Davy Russell closed the gap on Paul Townend(76 to 69) in the Irish jump jockey’s championship to just seven winners, after completing a double aboard Domination and Seamies Dream, at Clonmel on Thursday evening.
The Cork rider opened his account on the 1-4f Domination for Charles Byrnes, before adding to his tally, after giving Seamies Dream an excellent waiting ride. The latter, trained by Eamonn O’Connell, made headway after the turn-in and only took up the running after jumping the last.
Townend, who is out of action with a broken collarbone, will be on the sidelines for at least another week. He had been due to meet surgeon Tadhg O’Sullivan in Waterford earlier this week, but decided to give the injury some more time to heal.
With only two weeks remaining in the current national hunt season, the jockey’s title looks set to go right down to the final days of the Punchestown Festival. The last racing day of the 2010/11 season is on the 7th May.
