Ireland’s three times World Champion Katie Taylor meets German 57kg champion, Maike Kluners in their top of the bill clash at the Walter Raleigh Hotel in Youghal on Friday (6 May)- first bout 8pm.
The revelation at the weekend that Taylor may NOT take part in the London 2012 Games if the AIBA continue to insist on women boxers wearing skirts and tight fitting vests, has led to much support for the Irish champion from fellow boxers and officials around the globe but on Friday her only interest will be in defeating former Kick Boxing champion Maike Kluners. T
he St John’s Boxing Club in Fermoy are to be congratulated on putting together such a fine bill as apart from Taylor and Kluners (the world no 8) a big attendance is expected to come to see European and four times Irish champion Con Sheehan of Clonmel and also newly crowned Irish Elite Champion, Adam Bray, like Taylor from Bray BC, in action.
Also on the bill will be Riverstown’s David Roche, who recently claimed bronze at Pavlyukov Memorial Youth Multi-Nations in Russia where he overcame the highly rated Cuban champion, Yoangel Moyagibert. Overall a great night’s boxing can be expected as there are some 14 bouts on the bill, featuring some of this year’s national senior championship stars.
At heavyweight, another Cork man , Pat O’Shea (Army/Sunnyside) who is a world military championships silver medallist, takes on Thomas Rohan from the Ballinacarrow club in Sligo.
Welterweight Craig McCarthy (St Paul’s, Waterford) will box intermediate champion, Conor Tighe. McCarthy won well against his Chinese opponent recently. At super heavyweight, Galway’s Pat Corcoran will meet Chris Devanney (Ballinacarrow) who went the distance with China’s Olympic silver medallist in Dungarvan last month.
