Far too often alas  our  Newspapers ,Radio and TV include negative stories concerning the Youth of Ireland, North and South. Today though, SportsNewsIreland  brings you some  “positive  news” regarding the activities of a group which  represents all that is good  in the young generation even  in these difficult  financial days.

Ireland’s Scholar Athlete Games organisation  comprises of a group of volunteers mostly based at the University of Limerick, but otherwise completely independent of UL.  Their  aim is to co-ordinate a group of participants aged between 15 and 19 to attend  ‘The World Scholar Athlete Games’  and ‘The World Youth Peace Summit’ at Connecticut in June 2011.

Participants and staff volunteers are selected across the Island of Ireland and from all sides of the economic, political and religious divides. Participants choose one sport or arts activity. Sporting  activities include: baseball, basketball, chess, crew, golf, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, sailing, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. Arts activities include: visual art, choir, culinary arts, dance, photography, symphony, theatre and writing/poetry.

There will be some 90 participants and 35 volunteers , The ‘World Scholar Athlete Games’ is a massive event attracting huge media coverage on TV channels including CNN, ABC and HBO, and newspapers, The New York Times and The Boston Globe. Up to 2,500 participants will attend the games from 120 countries , with Ireland providing  the largest group represented outside of the US.

The follow-on event The World Youth Peace Summit is expected to attract 20,000 participants. Past speakers at other games include President Bill Clinton, Senator George Mitchell, and General Colin Powell and performers The Beach Boys, and Aretha Franklin. Already confirmed speakers include All Gore, Colin Powell, and Desmond Tutu.

This is a life changing opportunity for young people., the task now is to raise funding to complete their goals. They are not funded in any way so  have a number of fundraising activities around the country .The  main national fundraiser will be held at the University of Limerick on Sunday 22th of May there will be a  5k Peace Run and Walk this will start at 2pm.More Info; http://ulpeacewalk.webs.com/
