Ireland scored a convincing win over Team Great Britain 7-2 in Schwedt Oder, Germany,where Michael Conlon, Tyrone McCullagh, Willie McLaughlin, Darren O’Neill, Ken Egan and Ray Moylette all recorded wins in the Round Robin event involving Ireland, Great Britain and two German squads.
In an additional bout, Mayo’s Ray Moylette beat Germany’s Aytikin Yorici 12-7 after the Team GB light-welterweight withdrew due to injury.
The most spectacular win of the event was Kenny Egan’s Egan first round KO of 2005 AIBA World Cadet champ Obed Mbwakongo from London..
The GB light-heavyweight was counted out following a left to the body in the opening frame . Egan was 4-2 up when contest ended.
Belfast flyweight Michael Conlon got Ireland off to a winning start (as he did in his previous bout against Germany) this time with a 15-10 win over 2009 European Union champion, Oldham’s Thomas Stubbs. Next up, Tyrone McCullagh followed that winning a 9-4 verdict
over Sean McGoldrick, from Newport who won silver at the Commonwealth Games last November but may soon be upgraded to Gold as a result of the disqualification this week of the Sri Lankan Gold medallist for a drugs related offence.
European silver medallist O’Neill beat Callum Smith in the fight of the night 8-7 to Ireland. Illies BC’s Willie McLaughlin had one of the biggest winning margins with an 18-8 victory over Freddie Evans,the highly rated British representative.
In the evening’s last two fights, Clonmel’s Con Sheehan narrowly lost to Danny Price 7-9 Danny Price whilst Cathal McMonagle was beaten by Johann Witt in the final bout of the night.
The Irish team now faces Germany for a second time in Chemitz on Sunday having narrowly lost to the Germans earlier this week.(4-5)
