Preview
Longford have a poor record against Laois and have failed to beat Laois in Championship since 1968 when they won 3-9 to 1-04 while for third year in a round they must make the trip to Portlaoise for their championship opener and will hope that they can improve on defeats to Wicklow in 2009 and Louth last year.

That said Longford will come into this game in good form after beating Roscommon to win the Division 4 title and beating Cavan and Meath in subsequent challenge game and will looking to the attacking talents of Paul Barden and Brian Kavanagh to continue that upward momentum.

Laois meanwhile will play their football in Division one next year after a strong league campaign, that saw them narrowly lose the division 2 championship by a point to Donegal, one of only three defeats they have suffered this year. Sligo, Donegal, Derry, Meath and Antrim were all beaten on their way to the runner up spot in the table.

Team News:

Longford will hand championship debuts to Kevin Diffley, Michael Brady and Donal McElligott on Sunday. Glenn Ryan will have to plan without Diarmuid Masterson, as well as long term casualty Enda Williams who has been out of action with a shoulder injury since early February however David Barden has shaken off a knock to take his place in the team.

Diffley will replace Masterson in the centre of defence for Longford. JJ Mathews, the under-21 corner forward who came in the final win over Roscommon is also out after suffering a serious knee injury for this club.

Laois meanwhile will be without Padraig Clancy, who injured his hamstring in the narrow defeat to Donegal in the division two final. That injury means that former Brisbane Lions duo Colm Begley and Brendan Quigley will form the midfield pairing.

Daithi Carroll comes into the forward line, replacing Begley while there is no place for Donie Kingston, who despite his 0-3 points in the NFL final resume bench duties for this tie.
