Carlow 1-10 Westmeath 4-10

Westmeath put their poor league form behind them to register a win over Carlow in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship preliminary round at Dr Cullen Park.

The Lake County, who lost all seven of their Division two league games this year scored 3 first half goals on their way to a 4-15 to 1-10 win.

The margin of victory might have smaller but for some poor goalkeeping from Carlow keeper’s Kevin Keogh and his replacement Nicky Roberts saw Westmeath through to the next round.

Keogh allowed a hopeful long ball from Derek McNicholas to slip into the net before he deflected an Andrew Mitchell effort into the Carlow net, in between McNicholas had added his second of the day as the Lake County went into the break 3-05 to 0-4 points ahead.

Carlow gave themselves hope and threatened a comeback when chalked up three unanswered points and they reduced the deficit to two points on 65minutes with a goal of their own through Craig Doyle

However any comeback was soon ended as Brian Smith scored Westmeath’s fourth of the day to put the result beyond doubt.

In the Westmeath won by 5 points and will now face Galway in the next round on the 4th June.
