Joseph O’Brien won his first Irish Classic on Saturday, with the success of Roderic O’Connor in the Irish 2000 Guineas. The horse was trained by his father Aidan, who was winning the race for the seventh time.

The latter was thrilled with the result and thanked his owners for allowing Joseph take the ride: “We’re delighted. I cannot tell you how much we appreciate and how grateful we are to the boss for giving him that chance. Everyone was very supportive. Joseph rides him all the time at home, rides him in his work. He got the pace really right. We’d plan to go to either Epsom or France. That’s the thing to be discussed a lot.”

Joseph O’Brien added: “He jumped smartly, travelled nicely and handled the track very well. I didn’t mind going on myself and although I heard Richard Hughes coming at me late on, I didn’t see anyone else all the way.”
