Investec Epsom Derby favourite Carlton House, thrilled connections with an impressive workout on the Newmarket gallops ahead of his big race assignment on Saturday week.
The colt, who is owned by The Queen and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, was doing his final serious piece of work before Epsom and he impressed when easily disposing of his lead horse.
“He worked over seven furlongs on the watered gallop. He stretched out really nicely, ridden by Ryan Moore, who was thrilled with the way he went,” said The Queen’s racing manager John Warren.
“He’s gone the right way since York and the trainer and jockey were very satisfied and it was very pleasing to watch.
“As far as I know that was his last serious piece of work before Epsom. It’s very exciting.”
Carlton House, who won the Dante Stakes at York last month, has been very popular in the Investec Derby betting over the last few days and is now as short as 5/4 favourite for the race. Bookmakers expect a major public gamble on the colt come race day, with many predicting that he could even start as an odds on shot.
