It is the news that everyone has been waiting to hear. It has been confirmed that wonder mare Goldikova will take on crack miler Canford Cliffs in the Queen Anne Stakes, the opening race of Royal Ascot on June 14.
Trainer Freddie Head confirmed this morning that his 13 time Group 1 winner would travel to Ascot and look to claim back to back Queen Anne Stakes after she defeated Paco Boy in last year’s renewal. “We are going to Ascot for the Queen Anne. She has come out of the d’Ispahan very well and will improve for that run.”
The news that Goldikova will run in the Queen Anne will be good news for the connections of Canford Cliffs. His jockey Richard Hughes has continually talked up their chances of beating the wonder mare.
Speaking in his Racing Post column Hughes said “He has come out of the race in super form and there will be huge improvement from Newbury to Royal Ascot, where we’ll try to get one over on Goldikova.
“She just beat me in last year’s Queen Anne Stakes when I rode Paco Boy, but this time I have the horse who I think will beat her.”
The pair cannot be split by the bookmakers who make Canford Cliffs the narrow 5-4 favourite while Goldikova is 6-4. Every other horse in the market is in double figures for a race that cannot be missed.
