Saturday’s Investec Derby at Epsom was one of the most watched in the history of the race with every one hoping that her Majesty The Queen would win her first Derby with the Sir Michael Stout trained Carlton House.
However, the eventual winner Pour Moi did what Dancing Brave failed to do and came from what seemed an impossible position at tattenham corner. Off a slow pace under his 19 year old rider, having his first ride in the race, the French colt got up in the final strides, his rider was celebrating three strides from the line. The victory drew gasps from the reported half a million crowd who turned up in the sun shine on Epsom Downs to watch the Incestec Derby.
Asked to explain his dramatic celebration, the 19-year-old Barzalona said: “I don’t know why I did it – it just happened. The big question asked by most people in the industry after a fascinating Investec Derby win by Mickael Barzalona was, having spent this season in England riding for Godolphin, and now winning the best race in Europe for Coolmore “who will snap him up as first jockey”.
Coolmore without a first jockey this season have been using the best available, mainly Ryan Moore. With the latter unlikely to leave his present job, could Barzalona be Tipperary bound next season?.
