Four Sligo surfers have today been selected to represent Ireland when the the European Surfing Championships “Eurosurf” happen, in Bundoran, County Donegal from September 23rd until October 3rd.
The four lucky surfers are Shane Meehan, 29, from Strandhill, Stephen Kilfeather, 23 & Ashleigh Smith, 24 from Sligo and Cain Kilcullen, 24 from Enniscron who had to compete in a number of events to qualify for the European Championships.
Joining the four surfers will be Ronan Oertzen, Shauna Ward, Darragh McCarter & Richie Fitzgerald from Bundoran, Easkey Britton from Rossnowlagh & Oliver O’Flaherty, John McCurry from Portrush and Stephen Kelleher.
There is still one place up for grabs and that will be decided between John Britton from Rossnowlagh and Keith O’Brien from Tramore. The last place will be decided at Sea Sessions surf and music festival in Bundoran at the end of June.
Leading the team into the championship will be coach Pascal Devine, a native of County Tyrone and be managed by Stevie Burns from Portrush, County Antrim.
