Gerry Duffy wins Ironman

Gerry Duffy from Mullingar has won the first ever Deca Ironman event in Hampshire, England.

Duffy (43) was one of 20 competitors in the event, which was made up of a 2.5 mile swim, 116 mile cycle race and a full marathon.The entrants had to do the events every day for 10 days. The Irishman beat his nearest challenger by 19 hours.

The Mullingar native, who is a personal trainer by profession, ran 32 marathons in 32 days around Ireland in 2010. He has written a book about his previous exploits entitled He who Dares, Runs. It is published by Ballpoint Press and is in bookshops now
