Limerick man Conor Niland qualified for the main draw of Wimbledon with a 6-3 7-6(5) 6-4 win over Croatian Nikola Mektic at Roehampton today.

The 181st ranked player had to wait three days to complete the match due to a series of rain delays but fought through a straight sets victory to become the first Irishman in the main draw since Matt Doyle in 1984.

Niland’s first round opponent is world no. 51 Adrian Mannarino who beat U.S Open winner Juan Martin Del Potro in the third round of Queen’s before going out to British up-and-comer James Ward in the next round.
