Bryden Macpherson wins the British amateur title

Australian Bryden Macpherson has won the British amateur title to become the first Australian winner since Doug Bachli in 1954 on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who earned a place in next month’s Open and the US masters in 2012, beat Scot Michael Stewart 3&2 in the 36-hole final at Hillside near Southport

MacPherson led by one shot in a tight affair with 5 holes to play however a bogey by Stewart on the 14th followed by an impressive putt by the Australian on the 15th sealed the win.

3 up with three to go, Macpherson missed the green at the short 16th, but chipped to two feet with Stewart failing to make the birdie he needed to keep the match alive.
