However, Britton gave the team some hope finishing second in 15:37.78 behind Turkey’s Alemitu Bekele (15:37.15).Then the women’s 4x400m team of Joanne Cuddihy, Marian Heffernan, Claire Bergin and Michelle Carey achieved a similar position to help secure our status in the top flight.

Derval O’Rourke ran 13:11 in her season opener to take fourth, as did Mageean in the 1500m in 4:27.20. Jason Smyth and Amy Foster and 400m hurdler Timmy Crowe also won points with fourth places on Saturday.

After the men’s and women’s results were combined to provide final placings, Ireland escaped the drop by 24 points finishing 10th with 224.5 points
