As expected newly crowned US open champion Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from this week’s French open.

Following in the footsteps of fellow Northern Irish man and last years winner Graeme McDowell, McIlroy has opted out of the tournament in order to savour his record breaking performance in congressional.

The withdrawal of McIlroy though expected is a blow for the French Open, which is being played at the Le Golf National course near Paris, the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

World number 3 Martin Kaymer is the only representative from the Top 10 due in Paris while Bubba Watson will also play, making it a first start in Europe outside of a major.
