Fallon fancies Native Khan at Curragh

Kieren Fallon feels that while Carlton House is the horse to beat in the Irish Derby, Native Khan has a great each-way chance and is the safest option in the race.

The Clare jockey had ridden Native Khan to victory in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket earlier in the season and was due to take the mount on the colt at Epsom. However, he made a late switch to partner Recital for Ballydoyle, only to have the former horses owners take out a court injunction that prevented Fallon participating in the race.

Johnny Murtagh was given the ride on Native Khan and Pat Smullen rode Recital. Fallon believes the race will be run to suit Carlton House but is unable to explain why Native Khan is such a big price.

“Carlton House is the one they all have to beat on Sunday in the Irish Derby as he is likely to have the race run far more to his liking than at Epsom,” Fallon wrote in the Racing Post Weekender.

“Looking at the ante-post prices Native Khan is massively over-priced at 8-1 as he is sure to act much better around the Curragh than at Epsom, which I thought might work against him. In my opinion he should give the Queen’s horse a closer race this time.”
