Longford easily saw off Cavan in their first round football championship qualifier at Breffni Park on Saturday evening. The Leinster side were always in control and led by Sean McCormack, they got better and better as the minutes elapsed.
The visitors got off to a flying start and points by Kavanagh and McCormack has them two points to the good inside five minutes. Eugene Keating then got the Breffni side off the mark before McCormack struck again for Longford. McEnroe and McKeever hit Cavan points before Seanie Johnson levelled up the tie. Keating then gave the home side the lead for the first time but Paul Bardon hit back for Longford. Eugene Keating pointed just before the break to give the home side the advantage going in at the interval.
Niall McDermott pointed for Cavan just after the restart but again Longford replied through Paul Bardon. McCormack then tied up the match with an excellent score. The same player pointed to give his side the lead and Bernard McElvanney did likewise to stretch the advantage even further. Longford were very much in control at this stage and a Paul Bardon goal ended Cavan’s challenge. Seanie Johnson continued to try hard and he reduced the lead shortly after. McCormack and Johnson swapped scores before Brennan pointed for Cavan to narrow the gap.
McCormack scored ten points on the evening and he added a fine score near the finish. Brian Kavanagh killed off the contest with time almost up on the clock when he struck for goal number two. The same player added a point at the death to complete the scoring. The winners are playing with plenty of confidence at the moment and will not be a side that any team will want to draw in the next round.
