Laois 2-16 Tipperary 0-11

Laois easily defeated Tipperary in their football championship qualifier on Saturday night. More to follow……

Following their disappointing display against Dublin in the Quarter-Final of this year’s Leinster Championship, Laois will look to the Qualifier series and this weekend’s meeting with Tipperary as a chance to exact revenge. The sides will meet in the qualifier stage for the second successive year as Justin Mc Nutly and his charges aim to put last year’s surprise one point defeat to Tipp behind them.

Following a dismal Leinster championship Campaign, Laois boss Mc Nulty has rung the changes with Padraig Clancy being named at midfield for the O’Moore side. Donie Kingston who proved an effective substitute against Dublin has been named in attack.

Meanwhile Mj Tierney who garnered much attention for his ‘disillusioned’ tweet after he was dropped from the starting line-up to face Dublin will line out alongside Kingston in the Laois full- forward line.

Daithi Carroll, who suffered ankle ligament damage against Dublin, and Billy Sheehan are the players to make way for the attacking replacements.

A number of positional changes are also expected as former All-Ireland champion with Armagh, McNulty aims to ensure his team’s advancement in this year’s qualifier series.

Speaking to the Laois Nationalist, McNulty said: “I am in a very positive frame of mind and so are the players because of the serious work we have put in (since the defeat to Dublin). I believe that if we play to our potential we will win.

McNulty admits that his side were disapointed at their performance against Dublin but is adamant that they can put this right against Tipperary.
“The players knew they hadn’t done themselves justice against Dublin and they knew they had a lot more ability than they showed at Croke Park.”

McNulty also believes that his team’s defeat to Tipperary at the same stage of the competition last year will have no bearing on this year’s result.
He said, “Look, that game is history and history is just that, history. It has no bearing on how a team will perform this year and I know the players will go out and give it their all.”

Tipperary boss John Evans has made four changes to the side that were defeated convincingly by Kerry in the Munster championship for tomorrow’s clash in O’Moore Park.

Paul Fitzgerald will replace Matthew O’Donnell in goal while Stephen Hahessy will start instead of Conor Sweeney at left corner forward. Both changes were enforced as O’Donnell and Sweeney have gone to the United States for the summer.

Ciaran McGrath is introduced to the full back line in place of Paddy Codd while John Cagney comes into the attack with Seamus Grogan moving to midfield and Brian Jones making way.

Dual player Sean Carey has been added to the substitutes list after being released from the Tipperary hurling squad this week.

The game kicks off in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise at 7pm on Saturday with both teams vying for a place in the second round of this year’s qualifier series.
