Munster final : Kerry v Cork preview & team news

Kerry and Cork meet in the Munster Senior Football Final in Killarney on Sunday afternoon. In what is perhaps one of the greatest rivalries in modern day sport, the home side will be anxious to get one over on their near neighbours and current All Ireland champions.

Both sides go into this clash on the back of easy recent victories. Kerry had plenty to spare over both Limerick and Tipperary, while Cork were far too strong for Clare and Waterford. In recent seasons the two kingpins of gaelic football have met in All Ireland semi-finals and finals and this year the pair square off in the Munster decider.

Although the back door system has taken much from the championship since it’s introduction, there is no fear that either of this weekends finalists will settle for getting a second chance. There is much at stake, not least local bragging rights. Jack O’Connor and his men would like nothing better than to put one over on Cork as they travel down to Killarney as All Ireland champions.Kerry people will feel that the crown is merely borrowed and they will want it back at the first available opportunity.

Over the last few years, Cork have had the upper hand over the kingdom in Munster competition, but Kerry have proven the better side late in September when the championship was at stake. Conor Counihan’s side needed to win last season’s title if they were to make up for the near misses of the previous few seasons and they duly delivered on the day. The current side will not lack in confidence and a trip to Fitzgerald Stadium will be viewed as a challenge, rather than something to be fearful of.

Despite their two victories to date,Kerry have not really convinced this season. The loss of David Moran has proven a huge setback and with Seamus Scanlon yet to recover his best form, Kerry are struggling at midfield. Full back remains a worry, unless Tommy Griffin returns to the fold and Eoin Brosnan has yet to be really tested at centre back. Cork have had a tremendous twelve months and have to be favourites for this match.Paddy Powers are offering 11/10 on the rebels and this looks a tremendous value bet.
