Czech starlet Petra Kvitova claimed a stunning victory over Maria Sharapova to win the first Grand Slam title of her career at Wimbledon yesterday.

The 21 year old, the first women’s player born in the 1990’s to win a grand slam event, confirmed the new world order of Tennis as she romped to 6-3 6-4 straight sets win over her more illustrious opponent.

Kvitova, who was a semi finalist here last year, proved too strong for Sharapova who was let down by her serve on the day.

An emotional Kvitova was struggling to hold back the tears as she claimed the trophy, “It’s hard to find the words. To stand with the trophy and see great champions in the Royal Box. Of course I was nervous, I thought I could win Wimbledon, but I had to focus on every point.”
