Eugene Magee rescued a point for Ireland with a last minute equalliser against France in the Champions Challenge hockey tournament in Lille yesterday afternoon.
With the game drawing to a close and with France holding a 2-1 lead it looked all for the world that it was not going to be Ireland’s day. However Magee, who plays his club hockey in Belgium, popped up right at the death and scrambled his goal home to secure a precious point for Ireland.
Ireland had started the game much brighter and Gareth Watkins dived in to give Ireland the lead after some good play from Alan Giles.
The French struck back quickly though with goals from Matieu Catonnet tucking a brace of goals past goalkeeper David Harte. They held that lead until the last minute until Magee scored that last minute leveller.
That point leaves Ireland joint top of their group along with France after two games. Ireland had opened their campaign with a 3-2 win against Scotland and will play Russia in their next pool game which is due to kick off at 2pm Irish time.
