Liverpool have failed in their first offer for winger Stewart Downing after Aston Villa rejected their opening offer of 15 million pounds.

The 26 year old is one of Liverpool’s top target’s this summer and is said to be keen on a move to Anfield, however Villa are loathe to lose the England international, who was voted their player of the year last season.

The ball is very much in Liverpool course now, with Villa said to be holding out for 19 million pounds and it remains to be seen whether Kenny Dalglish will increase his offer.

According to the Daily Mail, the difference could be made up by the inclusion of David Ngog in any deal with Alex McLeish said to be an admirer of the French forward.
